Nurse Educator for BSN Degree Programs (Trad/RN to BSN)

Summary Description: The Nurse Educator position refers to a registered nurse who, as a member of the nursing faculty, is responsible for the development and/or implementation of the nursing program including curriculum, policies, student advising, and evaluation, as well as mentoring and collaborating with nurse educator associates and clinical teaching associates.

Primary Job Duties:
The Nurse Educator will hold the core competencies described within the scope of practice of an academic nurse educator (National League for Nursing, published 2012; evaluated 2018):

Competency I: Facilitate Learning
Nurse Educators are responsible for creating an environment in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings that facilitates student learning and the achievement of desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes.

Competency II: Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization
Nurse Educators recognize their responsibility for helping students develop as nurses and integrate the values and behaviors expected of those who fulfill that role.

Competency III: Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies
Nurse Educators use a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate student learning in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings, as well as in all domains of learning.

Competency IV: Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes
Nurse Educators are responsible for formulating program outcomes and designing curricula that reflect contemporary health care trends and prepare graduates to function effectively in the health care environment.

Competency V: Function as a Change Agent and Leader
Nurse Educators function as change agents and leaders to create a preferred future for nursing education and nursing practice.

Competency VI: Pursue Continuous Quality Improvements in the Nurse Educator Role
Nurse Educators recognize that their role is multidimensional and that an ongoing commitment to develop and maintain competence in the role is essential.

Competency VII: Engage in Scholarship
Nurse Educators acknowledge that scholarship is an integral component of the faculty role, and that teaching itself is a scholarly activity.

Competency VIII: Function within the Educational Environment
Nurse Educators are knowledgeable about the educational environment within which they practice and recognize how political, institutional, social, and economic forces affect their role.

The Nurse Educator will participate in the following activities drawn primarily from Competencies I through IV:
  • Prepare to teach face-to-face, hybrid, and online courses in areas of expertise.
  • Co-develop handbooks for faculty and students for the Division of Nursing.
  • Refine courses as outlined in the BSN Curriculum to promote and maintain approvals and accreditation.
  • Introduce prospective diverse faculty to Warner Pacific University.
In addition, the Nurse Educator will integrate within the University through the following expectations:
  • Work collegially with administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Understand and promote the mission, vision, values, and core themes of Warner Pacific University.
  • Exhibit excellent communication skills in all interactions with administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities provided by the institution.
  • Adhere to University policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to a Christian liberal arts education by upholding the mission of the University and abiding by the Employment Standards and Lifestyle Agreement.
  • Exhibit commitment to inclusiveness and sensitivity in areas of national origin, ethnicity, culture, gender, and disabilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in nursing (MS) required. Note: BSN Degree in Nursing is permissible if applicant is passionate and otherwise qualified, is willing to have oversight and mentorship from a master’s prepared faculty, and plans to enroll in a graduate degree program within two-to-three years.
  • Two or more years of experience in nursing higher education preferred.
  • Unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse Licensure required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD Degree in Nursing or related field for future leadership roles of the Nurse Educator.
  • Depth and breadth of professional experience in the field, to include: approval and accreditation processes for BSN Degree Programs and knowledge of healthcare delivery in the greater Portland area.
  • College teaching experience in a relevant curriculum.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

Physical Demands – Work Environment: 
The position is located in a typical office and academic environment.  Professional/business casual attire is required. Scrub sets are permissible in lab and clinical environments.
