Career Advisor

Summary Description:    The Career Advisor is a full-time, benefit eligible position reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Engagement.  This role serves as a resource for students by coordinating career workshops and job fairs, networking with employers, promoting events on campus, and updating the campus’ online career platform. The Career Advisor will promote a culture of college of exploration for new students throughout their time on campus. The Career Advisor will assist students in gaining meaningful employment in jobs applicable to their field of study; assists students with the job search process, including teaching workshops and critiquing resumes, cover letters, etc. Coordinates site visits (online and in person) with various academic departments, administrators, and other potential sites of opportunity.

Primary Job Duties:
  • Oversee and promote career events, with topics including but not limited to cover letters, resumes, and interviewing and networking tips. 
  • Work with the AVPSSE to implement events on WPU’s Handshake career platform. Assist with employer approvals and career platform promotion.
  • Promote other appropriate local career events and post relevant events on the WPU career webpage.
  • Form strategic partnerships around campus to promote career exploration and employment related-events.
  • Under the guidance of the AVPSSE and Director of Student Success and Advising to work closely with PGS students and academic affairs on best support practices for adult learners.  
  • Ability to advise/coach students in developing career and/or employment goals.  Provides individual support and encouragement to students. Advocates for students with other university services as needed. Ability to make procedural decisions and judgments with skills in gathering data, compiling information, and preparing reports.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent in-person and customer service skills, maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to use effective communication skills, both oral and written, including presentations, speaking before public groups and meetings and demonstrate effective listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to self-direct, self-pace, multi-task and function well under pressure of multiple competing deadlines.
  •  Develops and fosters professional work relationships with faculty, administration, and students across program areas on both Mr. Tabor and Centre 205 campus to ensure program services meet the student and university needs. May participate in Academic Success departmental meetings and serve on various campus committees as requested. Willingness to work a flexible schedule.
  • Ability to travel/drive locally on a weekly, daily and/or on an as needed basis.
  • Organize, Coordinate and Oversee campus career fair and/or transportation to off campus career activities.
  • Coordinate employer/recruiter campus visits.
  • Oversee Career Services’ work-study employees.
  • Participate in WPU’s Career and Calling Collaborative and support the group’s initiatives.
  • Be present in the office on a regular basis unless arrangements are made with the employee’s direct supervisor.
  • Participates in identifying, researching, and implementing new and innovative programs to meet departmental and divisional goals.
  • Contribute to the support and implementation of the Strategic Enrollment Plan.
  • Participate in Warner Pacific University professional development opportunities.
  • Adhere to University policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 2 years of prior experience in fields such as career services, advising or recruitment background
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with adult learners, faculty, and staff throughout campus
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently and effectively solve problems and initiate and implement projects independently
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of effective training techniques and adult learning theory. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including social media content.
  • Ability to work with and assist students having a diverse range of skills, motivation, and academic or vocational goals.
  • Proficient in computer programs including Windows, Outlook, Word, and Excel, and the Internet
  • Maintain valid driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution preferably in Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Human Resources, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of policy, regulations, and practices for career advising.
  • Prior experience in higher education preferably career/vocational coaching, resume writing, and career services
  • Experience with online career platforms such as Handshake or other career platforms.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write and speak Spanish
Physical Demands – Work Environment: 
The position is located in a typical office environment.  Professional/business attire is required.
