Lab Manager/Nurse Educator for the Prelicensure BSN Program

Summary Description:  The Lab Manager/Nurse Educator position refers to a registered nurse who, as a member of the Department of Nursing Staff, is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of the nursing skills and simulation labs. This will include policies, procedures, and evaluation, managing nursing lab equipment and supplies, mentoring and collaborating with nurse educator associates and clinical teaching associates.  The Lab Manager/Nurse Educator will also have a teaching load up to 6 courses/year (18 credits) to maintain relevancy and currency with the BSN Degree Program Curriculum.  This is a full-time (10 month), benefit eligible position reporting to the Dean of Nursing. 
 
Essential Functions:
The Lab Manager/Nurse Educator will hold the core competencies described within the scope of practice of an academic nurse educator (National League for Nursing, 2012):
 
Competency I: Facilitate Learning
Nurse Educators are responsible for creating an environment in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings that facilitates student learning and the achievement of desired cognitive, affective, and psychomotor outcomes.
 
Competency II: Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization
Nurse Educators recognize their responsibility for helping students develop as nurses and integrate the values and behaviors expected of those who fulfill that role.
 
Competency III: Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies
Nurse Educators use a variety of strategies to assess and evaluate student learning in classroom, laboratory, and clinical settings, as well as in all domains of learning.
 
Competency IV: Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes
Nurse Educators are responsible for formulating program outcomes and designing curricula that reflect contemporary health care trends and prepare graduates to function effectively in the health care environment.
 
Competency V: Function as a Change Agent and Leader
Nurse Educators function as change agents and leaders to create a preferred future for nursing education and nursing practice.
 
Competency VI: Pursue Continuous Quality Improvements in the Nurse Educator Role
Nurse Educators recognize that their role is multidimensional and that an ongoing commitment to develop and maintain competence in the role is essential.
 
Competency VII: Engage in Scholarship
Nurse Educators acknowledge that scholarship is an integral component of the faculty role, and that teaching itself is a scholarly activity.
 
Competency VIII: Function within the Educational Environment
Nurse Educators are knowledgeable about the educational environment within which they practice and recognize how political, institutional, social, and economic forces affect their role.
 
The Nurse Educator will participate in the following activities, drawn primarily from Competencies I through IV:
  • Develop and coordinate aspects of skills and simulation laboratories for cohort sizes of 12-48 prelicensure students based on current, evidence-based nursing practices.
  • Prepare and teach courses in areas of expertise.
  • Contribute policies and procedures to handbooks for faculty and students for the Department of Nursing.
  • Develop courses as outlined in the Prelicensure BSN Curriculum Proposal.
  • Co-develop an application for gold-standard accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Introduce prospective diverse faculty to Warner Pacific.
The Lab Manager aspects of this position will include:
  • Maintaining inventory and acquisition of adequate equipment and supplies for the curriculum’s offering of nursing skills and simulations.
  • Coordinating with outside vendors (e.g., Medline) and Warner Pacific University administrators on the purchase and verification of needed supplies and equipment.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of simulation and skills laboratory activities into the nursing curricula according to INACSL and other accreditation (CCNE) standards.
  • Coordinating with DON administrators and faculty in scheduling of simulation and skills laboratory activities.
  • Coordinating with DON faculty on the expectations of faculty and students during simulation and skills laboratory activities.
  • Programming and developing simulation scenarios and virtual patient cases and technical operation of human patient simulations for the simulation and skills laboratory.
  • Preparing and “taking down” the simulation and skills laboratory for scheduled activities.
  • Recruiting and training “standardized patients” for use in simulation and skills laboratory activities.
In addition, the Lab Manager/Nurse Educator will integrate within the University through the following expectations:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in nursing (MS) required.
  • Five years of experience in nursing higher education required.
  • Unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse Licensure required.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Development and management of skills and simulation laboratories, and knowledge of healthcare delivery in the greater Portland area.
  • College teaching experience in a relevant curriculum.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.

The position is located in a typical office environment.  Professional/business casual attire is required.
